Silo creates intimate campaign for Dutch National Veterans Day

Since 2011, SILO has been involved in the Dutch National Veterans Day. We provide branding, campaign concepts and promotion resources. The event is being organized since 2005 on every last Saturday of June, to thank the more than 115,000 veterans who have fought for peace, now and in the past. The day furthermore is meant to promote social recognition and appreciation of all Dutch veterans. Almost 100,000 people visit the event.

This years’ approach is very personal: Veterans are people like us all, but they also carry a special and often heavy experience. Dutch veterans have a very diverse background. Among them are both WWII warriors and KNIL soldiers who have served in former colonies, but also those who have served in peace missions in, for instance, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Mali, Iraq and the Balkans.

In this campaign we present veterans in a pure and intensive way. Not veterans in uniform, but the men and women behind those uniforms. The intrusive look in combination with the uniform’s silhouette gives us a hint of what veterans in service of peace have experienced. For the photographs, we have worked together with Jeroen Hofman, who shot all the personal images of the veterans. Silo has given the images a moving effect, making them more alive. We did not just take pictures, we also spoke extensively to the veterans.
