Zaans Medical Center is nominated for the Frame Awards in the category of Healthcare Center of the Year. Both the professional jury and a people’s vote will decide the winners. SILO together with Mecanoo spent two years creating an integrated design for a ‘healing environment’ which provides optimum conditions to advance the patients’ recovery.
The new Zaans Medical Center is the first LEAN hospital in the Netherlands. It is an efficient and compact building in which professional healthcare and a personal approach strengthen each other. Architecture, urbanism, landscape, interiors and spatial identity are brought together in a coherent design.
The spacious, light-flooded central hall features a 1,500m2 hand-drawn illustration of the human body, assembled with elements of the region’s industrial heritage, such as shipbuilding and the invention of the crankshaft. A collection of similarly-styled drawings on walls, glazed partitions, and lifts throughout the building support a sense of well-being and provide positive distractions for adults and children. In addition to this distinctive spatial identity, SILO also designed the signage and a new corporate identity including logo for the Zaans Medical Center.
The Frame Awards honor the design teams behind the world’s best interior designs. Out of a total of 892 entries, the professional jury selected five nominees per category. The public is also encouraged to participate by voting for their favorites. The winners will be announced on February 21, 2018, during the Award Show in the Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam.
