Zwemcentrum Rotterdam, the city’s new aquatics center, has received the StiB Award 2018. The project won for being the most successful urban transformation that contributes to strengthening the vitality and dynamism of the city or village.
The conversion of the former municipal office building into the aquatic center is the first completed project of the urban redevelopment of the Hart van Zuid area. The aquatics center offers all the facilities that professional athletes need but also caters to recreational swimmers. Together with Kraaijvanger Architects, SILO created a surprising, welcoming and safe entrance area.
A mosaic with three friendly and courteous whales contributes to security. As watchful water giants, the whales induce more pro-social behavior in a natural way. In its entirety, the mosaic applies identity to the swimming pool and enhances the visitor experience of the entrance area.
The ‘Steden in Beweging’ (Cities in Motion) Award has been presented yearly since 2013. A five-member expert jury visited the aquatics center and judged, among other things, how the building meets the needs of its users, innovative aspects of the realized design, and how it strengthens the surrounding urban area and the identity of the city/district. In addition to the expert jury, the visitors to the Provada also voted unanimously for the project.
